- ---Discussion of A3k "design flaw deleted---

-
- I have followed this discussion closely as it has been very well covered by
- both sides.
-
- I am reluctant to add my two cents as I don't have the level of expertise
- of the other participants but FWIW, I remember a post by Dave Haynie
- regarding this subject matter. The gist of it was that the controller
- had termination in early models but it was considered too much to expect
- the common user to remove them when adding external devices as they were
- placed in an inaccessable spot and were soldered in. It was discovered
- that by a quirk in the SCSI bus (not spec), a short lead to the terminated
- HD made controller termination unnecessary. The SCSI bible covers the
- MINIMUM length of cable to the device as well as the maximum. I have seen
- several discussions of this point in comp.sys.scsi as well as it's mention
- in the standard SCSI FAQ. It is often recommended that too short distances
- between devices be eliminated when adding devices. I have not applied this
- as yet due to financial concerns but I think that many people experiencing
- SCSI bus problems in the A3000 might try replacing the cable from the
- controller to the drives with a known good quality cable and then insuring
- that the controller is either terminated or that external devices with
- termination are added. As I recall, the SCSI FAQ recommends a minimum of
- twelve inches of cable between devices.
-
- I leave it to others to decide whether the original cabling is a design
- flaw or an ingenious and customer friendly solution to the problem.
-
- Cheers,
